Verna’s Vlog is a series in which I sit down with some of the incredible people who are a part of the U of A community to share their stories and learn more about what they do.

The ß÷ßäÉçÇø’s Student Experience Action Plan (SEAP) has made impressive strides in its first year, focusing on improving the student experience through conversations, collaboration and co-creation. Launched in January 2024, the SEAP has involved students directly in shaping initiatives to enhance their university experience.

Sarah Wolgemuth, associate vice-president student experience and SEAP project director and Christian Fotang, SEAP strategic coordinator and former Students’ Union president, have been at the forefront of this project. Both have worked tirelessly to ensure student feedback is not just heard, but is actively shaping the university’s actions. From the introduction of increased mental health counsellors to renovations aimed at improving accessibility, the results of SEAP are already visible.

Students’ engagement with the plan has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the university’s focus on their needs. Through his interactions, Christian highlights that students are noticing tangible improvements. There is also growing awareness and excitement, especially as initiatives like accessibility enhancements and academic advising improvements take root.

Sarah emphasizes the innovative co-creation methodology, where students are active partners in shaping their university experience. This approach has garnered national and international interest, as it moves beyond simple collaboration to empower students in co-designing solutions. Over 72 initiatives have been launched under SEAP, addressing priority areas identified by students. The 2023-24 SEAP Report to Community provides more details about these initiatives, which are categorized under the seven themes of the SEAP.

Looking ahead, SEAP 2.0 is already in the works. With the current student survey response rates exceeding previous years, the team plans to use this data to drive further improvements, ensuring the ß÷ßäÉçÇø continues to adapt to the evolving needs of its diverse student body.
