Marlena (she/her) is in her third year of English and History major in the Faculty of Arts. Originally from Vancouver, Marlena joined the U of A from B.C. last year; however, her family is originally from Germany. She plans to study in the After Degree Education program to become a teacher once she completes her BA. Outside of school, she is a busy bee dedicating her time to volunteering and work. Marlena escapes the buzz by taking time to read, listen to music, walk her three dogs, watch movies and discover Edmonton’s cafe scene. She prefers Rutherford South for its quiet atmosphere and historical architecture.

This relaxed, self-guided session invites visitors to bring sketchbooks and capture the beauty of birds from the museum's extensive collection. All are welcome, regardless of skill level, creating a great opportunity to study intricate feather patterns and textures up close. Basic supplies such as pens and pencils will be provided, but it's recommended that you bring your own. Also, if you don't like to draw in silence, bring some headphones to listen to music!

  • ⌚12 - 5 p.m.
  • 📍喵咪社区 Museums Gallery A - 11104 87 Ave, Edmonton, 喵咪社区 (TELUS International Centre)

Step into the world of Imperial China with Birds & Beasts. This exhibition showcases the intricate symbolism behind rank badges, ornately embroidered textiles worn by Qing dynasty officials to signify their status and authority. The history fanatic in me is excited to check this event out as it will feature historical artifacts. This exhibit highlights how different animals (e.g., majestic birds for civil officials and powerful beasts for military ranks) conveyed hierarchy, identity and imperial power. This is a great chance to look at the artistry and cultural significance of these textiles, gaining insight into fascinating aspects of Qing court life. The event offers curated tours in both English and Mandarin.
