Pre-submission Peer Review and/or Budget Justification Review

SSHRC Insight Grant 2025 Competition 

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Research Partner Network are pleased to offer faculty member applicants the possibility of an internal peer review and/or a budget justification review to support applications for the Insight Grant competition. Participation is voluntary, but past experience shows that pre-submission feedback helps to improve an applicant’s chances of competition success.

The College has established a panel of volunteer peer reviewers who are willing to read a final draft of your application. Many of our volunteers are successful grant recipients and/or past members of SSHRC merit review committees. (If you’d like to serve as a peer reviewer, please get in touch with your Vice/Associate Dean of Research or Oliver Rossier <orossier@ualberta.ca>.)

The budget justification reviews will be carried out by a team of staff from the College Office of Research and the Research Partner Network who will check for red flags, common mistakes, and ineligible expenses.

To take advantage of these services, you will need to have a high-quality, penultimate version of your application uploaded to the SSHRC Research Portal (do not click on “Submit”) so that you can share the preview PDF.

Here are the deadlines that apply:

July 15, 2025

Register for peer review and/or budget justification review. This gives us time to find a suitable match between your topic and a peer reviewer and tells us how many will need a budget justification review.

NOON on September 2, 2025 (but if possible please submit as early as possible to help us navigate the beginning of term rush)

  • Absolute latest cut-off date for submitting a near final draft of your application 
  • Your draft must be uploaded into SSHRC’s (do not click “Submit”) and then download and share the preview PDF
  • While you wait for results, get ready to create a “New Proposal Request” in the Uß÷ßäÉçÇø Researcher Home Page (but do not deposit as yet)

September 10, 2025

  • Reviewers return feedback to applicants

September 12, 2025

  • Deadline for those in the Faculty of Arts, Business, Education and Law to submit their final applications for review by uploading the preview PDF to the Uß÷ßäÉçÇø Researcher Home Page

September 19, 2025 (RAS deadline)

September 30, 2025 (RAS deadline)

  •  Submit your application into SSHRC’s by 10 am.
